Overview

Into Work, grant supports employers to provide the work experience element of post-16 further education courses to enable progression for individuals into the construction industry. This grant is split into two elements:

  • Completion of the work experience element of an approved further education course. The work experience must last a minimum of 1 week or 30 hours.
  • Completion of subsequent three-months direct employment (this can include employment as part of an apprenticeship). The employment must begin within 12 months of the work experience placement ending.

If the subsequent employment is an apprenticeship, you may also be eligible to separately apply for apprenticeship grants. See the Apprenticeship grants page for details of available support in this area.

Who can apply for these grants?

You can apply if you’re a CITB Registered employer and up to date with your Levy Returns, as well as adhering to the Grants Scheme policy and specific requirements for this grant.

You can apply for the work experience element of this grant for further education learners where the work experience starts on or after 1 September 2023, and then the employment element once they have been directly employed staff on the payroll for three months.

Grant for three months direct employment is only available where the individual has previously completed eligible work experience, with the same employer, while on an approved further education course.

The work experience timeframe is determined by the training provider but must last a minimum of 1 week or 30 hours to be eligible for this grant.

Which courses are covered by the grant?

This grant supports work experience on the further education construction courses listed below, where the work experience forms a clear element of the course:

  • T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction
  • T Level in Onsite Construction
  • Any Diploma level 2 or 3 listed here
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering – SCQF Level 6

This grant supports work experience on the traineeships listed below, where the work experience forms a clear element of the course:

  • Construction Traineeship

The traineeship must be completed with a provider delivering ESFA-funded traineeships. These providers are listed below:

  • Hull Training & Adult Education
  • Optimum Skills
  • Salford College
  • The Learning Foundry
  • If you know of a provider delivering an ESFA-funded Construction Traineeship not listed above, please contact your local CITB Adviser.

How much is it?

£500 work experience grant paid on completion of work experience.

£1,000 employment grant paid following three months completed direct employment, for an individual who had earlier completed the work experience. This can include employment as part of an apprenticeship.

How to apply

You can apply for the work experience grant as soon as it has been completed, and then later apply for the employment grant following three months of direct employment, or you can apply for both grants following three months of direct employment.

You must apply for a work experience grant within 52 weeks of the end of work experience, and you must apply for an employment grant within 52 weeks of the end of the first three months of the individual’s direct employment.

Grant for three months of direct employment is only available where the individual has previously completed eligible work experience which started on or after 1 September 2023, with the same employer, while on an approved further education course.

    • Evidence of the work experience must be from the college or course provider, either on headed paper or in an email. The evidence must show the following information:
      • Full name of the individual
      • Further Education course title
      • The dates of the work experience
    • Evidence of three months of direct employment must be in the form of PAYE records

How many applications are allowed?

There is a cap on how many Into Work grants can be paid to each employer each year, which is reset from 1 April.

Each employer may receive a maximum of 5 work experience grants each year, plus 5 employment grants each year.

This maximum of 5 work experience payments of £500, plus 5 employment payments of £1,000, results in a total possible maximum of £7,500 Into Work grant per year.
